Dr Pepper is probably my favorite soft drink. From it’s inception in the late 1800’s, they’ve had some pretty interesting advertising slogans. Its first was “The King Of Beverages”. Yeah, take THAT Budweiser. Dr Pepper is the king of ALL beverages: Soda, beer, wine, coffee, tea, EVERYTHING.
In the 60’s came the slogan, “The Worlds Most Misunderstood Soft Drink”, which isn’t quite as grand as the KING OF ALL BEVERAGES, but probably more accurate. A lot of people lump Dr Pepper in with Pepsi and Coke, but it’s not a cola. It’s…something else. Oh, and BTW, Dr Pepper is NOT cherry flavored. I hate when I got to a resturant and ask for a Dr Pepper and the waitress says, “We don’t have that. Is Cherry Coke OK?” No. No it’s not OK. It’s two different flavors. You might as well offer me a fucking Fresca, lady.
Anyway, I’ve got two mp3’s found on an advertising CD from Dr Pepper’s history. They’re both pretty cringe worthy, although I totally remember the second one, so it happens to be my favorite. It’s on heavy rotation in iTunes and I sing along with it everytime. Off key, of course. I love that faux-rockin’ number.
The first cut is the classic 70’s commercial, “I’m a Pepper, You’re a Pepper”. Listen: I’m a Pepper, You’re a Pepper
Here’s the other one called “Make The World Taste Better”. I thought this was from the late 80’s or early 90’s, but all the info I found says it’s from the early 2000’s. Listen: Make The World Taste Better
Given how long it’s been around, I wonder if Dr. Pepper was a sasparilla experiment that went awry. It is an odd kind of soda. Not really a cola, and definitely not a Cherry Coke. Certainly deserves its own classification.
I’m pretty sure that the 39 flavors thing they slapped on the newish label is some sort of mystic voodoo BS.
I haven’t had much experience with Dr. Pepper - never was released where I grew up (I grew up in Africa), but didn’t all sodas start off as something else before being marketed as a soft drink…Coke was meant to be a medicine of sorts, etc.
What constitutes a soda drink anyway? For example I drink alot of Red Bull - it’s carbonated, it’s flavoured, it comes in a can, it’s non-alcoholic, but it’s not really a soda, is it?
Besides Red Bull - I tend to but Fanta above other sodas, preferably Grape, but Coca-Cola is a close second.
I love Dr Pepper too
love you tim
Pretty sure it started out as some sort of health tonic.
Fun fact: In Europe, Snapple and Dr. Pepper are produced by the same company.
I dont know much about Dr Peppers history, all i know is that when i drink it i feel fucking fantastic! Its like im walking on sunshine!
Dr. Pepper is actually based on prune juice from what I’ve heard. The more you know.
I think I remember the inventor of DP wanting the soda to taste like a candy store smells… If you keep that in mind the taste seems pretty close
IMA PEPPER ARE YOU A PEPPER?!
Holy shit, exactly Tim, WHAT IS A PEPPER?!
I also agree, Dr. Pepper isn’t cherry flavored! I haven’t had some stupid cunt ask me if cherry coke was ok instead, but if someone does some day, I AM WALKING THE FUCK OUT!
Sorry, but I have to call TNB on the guy from Africa saying he likes grape soda. If he’s a true DV freak then he’ll get the f#$k over it very quickly.
Dr. Pepper tastes like a mixture of Coke, Pepsi, Sprite, Fanta, and a lot of Polar Cream Soda. My taste buds are alternatively kicked in the nuts and jacked off every millisecond while that shit’s in my mouth. It hurts so good.
Damn. Those corporate bastards discontinued it in Russia back in the early 2000s. I remember collecting golden rings from Pepper cans as a kid for some prize I can’t remember. I hope someday I will walk in a store and buy a bottle of it again.
They used to tout their caffeine too, like Mt. Dew. Published reports showing when people are most in need of a little pick-me-up and linked it into their branding. That is what why the old label had the 10-2-4 for when you most need it.
Also, I know there used to be some fondness for drinking heated up DP.
I recall Dr Pepper’s attempted foray into the Australian market about 15 years ago. EPIC FAIL. Nobody wanted to drink the stuff. Most Aussies thought it tasted like cough medicine.
I love FLAT Dr.pepper, the carbonated bite is too much for my delicate digestive track. D;
I think that’s why I love the cherry so much, it tastes EXACTLY the same but with a better after taste.
Here is the history of the good Doctor. http://www.drpeppermuseum.com/About-Us/History-Of-Dr–Pepper.aspx Thet also claim to be the biggest soda museum in the world in the archives tab you can ask questions about any sodas.
Dr. Pepper is probably my favorite soda too. what really pisses me off is when people argue me that its made by pepsi or coke…. its not, its distributed by both. ever go to a Taco Bell? Pepsi products…. go to a Burger King, Coke products. but they both carry Dr. Pepper. although i think Taco Bell recently stopped serving it (i havent been to Taco Bell in a long time)
