Fizzled Out
Tracking Failed Sodas And Their Cult Following
Cracking The Tab
Categories: Fizzled Out, General, News

 And so it begins…

Tab is still sold to this day! It's not widely available in all areas.

I’ve been wanting to start a site devoted to the love of soda’s Past for awhile now. Up until recently the main reason for putting this project on the backburner was my belief there simply was no need for it. After all, who wants to read about online petitions to bring back Josta, the history of Surge, Or how even though EVERYONE says “Mr. Pibb”, the name and formula is long gone, since replaced with Pibb Xtra? Apparently, there ARE many out there who do (which is why you’re here, hopefully)

Much like the content of this site, my fulltime job is a bit strange. I’m a podcaster. For four years I’ve hosted a successful show called Distorted View Daily. Occasionally I’d bring up the topic of my love for soda and each time I did, I would get comments and E-mails from listeners letting me know I wasn’t the only one with  this odd fascination with pop.

While I’ve always been a fan of soda, the moment I realized I was a complete freak was during the 2002 launch of Coke Vanilla. I found myself at the local grocery store everyday for a week straight waiting for it to hit the shelves. After I came to terms with my obsession, I began researching other drinks that have come and gone. Next, I started a collection of cans and bottles of discontinued soda (the mark of a true Pop Nut). Now, I’m launching Fizzled Out, for other soda freaks to unite.

While this site will be devoted to lost and forgotten drinks, I also hope to keep up with the lastest soda news and product launches. After all, today’s new drink will most likely be tomorrow’s fizzled out failure (Coke Blak, anyone?) Down the road, I’d love to interview some of the people involved with the design of some our favorite long gone sodas.  Finally, your comments and contributions will be most appreciated. If you have a favorite drink or soda memory, let me know!

Again, welcome to Fizzled Out!

Jigoo, Tim. Glad to see you’re finally doing something with your soda idea. I’m not exactly a soda freak, but I’m a fan of pointless trivia, so I’m sure I’ll enjoy the new site.

Hey freak! I was RAISED on TAB in the 70s.. my mother was a complete CocaCola addict and had the glassware, swore loyalty only to Coke products and, yes it’s true, even my first Dog was named Coke because of his “syrup colored brown coat”… (little bastard bit me in the face when I was four years old and the 1 year old Dachshund was “recycled”.)

This website’s a great idea.. some things I’d like to see on it are commercials that advertise these products in TV and print form, reviews of the products and authorized letterheads from company officials executing some of these 800 pound gorilla beverages.

I saw that Coca-cola has an exhibition where they show off the latest Coke products, offer exclusive products from around the world and have machines that dispense soda like an acrobatic fountain. Have you heard of this place? It’s in Atlanta, GA - http://www.worldofcoca-cola.com/

You should do a DV podcast from there and also a video for http://www.fizzledout.com

    Jigooo.

Jiggo, Tim! I love this new website. It’s a great Idea. I left about 16 voicemails about it, so be prepared.
I think this should be updated more frequently!

  10. Jason Jackson says:

    Hey Tim,

Your awesome by the way and yeah old sodas new sodas, just interesting and hell, but I think you should work on also compiling a list of all sodas and pops past and present, it would be cool to have an archive as such. Also it might give you a goal for your collection>?

I love the new idea and would defonitely like to see a podcast for this. Maybe a weekly bonus section on the sideshow about soda? Would defonitely sweeten the deal for me :)

  11. Rane says:

    Great work, Tim!

My white whale is Diet Mountain Dew Code Red. They don’t sell the diet locally and it kills me inside a little more each day.

  12. THE MEXICAN says:

JIGOO TIM I Love coca cola it is the nector of the gods.

  13. Jap.skat.sniff.freak says:

    Jigoo & all that…
I live in Japan where there are wondeful & weird soda released. Hell, you’ve tried some…Cucumber Pepsi, etc. They have released a limited “Final Fantasy Potion” soda. Tastes like crap & over carbonated. Spicy bubbles was my first impression. There is also Fanta Charge, which is jelly in a soda type liquid, really weird. If you don’t shake it right, you’ll have to suck the jelly out like tossing salad.
I’ll try & get some over to you. Anything else that you want, just let me know.

  14. Chucklemon says:

Hey Tim! Good to see you branching out from things other than the “oddities” of DV. =P Keep up the great work here and on DV! I’ll be sure to check both sites from now on ^>^

Jigoo Tim, I love this website so much, I know you’ve been talking about it for a while and I’m so glad to see it up and running, I have a feeling this is going to be huge!

Did you ever try Pepsi Blue? It was a blueberry or blue-raspberry flavored soda and the design on the label was very cool. This had to have been about 7 years ago, it sucks when you’re a kid, you take things for granted and they disappear. Coke BlaK was also one of my favorites, coffee flavored coke in little glass bottles. Wonderful. I definitely think they deserve a page.

Hey, Tim! I decided to check out the site because my family drinks Diet Mountain Dew like very polite vampires drink blood. Also, I think you should review videos of commercials for soda if you’re strapped for content ideas.

I love the site. Thank you–I look forward to the future of the past. Looking forward to Like and Hubba Bubba Bubble Gum soda coverage.

  18. Headywon says:

Hey I’m not sure where to comment about this, but I was wondering if anyone else has seen this extenze energy shot being sold anywhere? WTF?! The fucking company that makes dick pills now makes energy drinks? Would anyone actually drink that shit?!

  19. Funny that you list Tab. I used to work for a small company (~25 employees) and we had a soda machine in our break room. The soda machine was one of the smaller ones with only six sodas to choose from. The vendor would only come out once per week and one of the slots was dedicated to Tab soda. The only person in our company who liked Tab was our president and CEO. So for a couple of days a week there would be nothing in the machine except for Tab and most of us would not drink it. John, our CEO, was the only one who would drink it and it really sucked for the rest of us.
